cinema in the next reality…

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Yesterday it was announced that Ingmar Bergman died. Today, Michelangelo Antonioni died. Both were very old gentlemen, surely at the end of long and brilliant lives.  Both genius’ of 20th century filmmaking. I like to think they’re shaking hands with Kurosawa about now.
You know how they always say things come in threes? I hope not.

Can YOU make a shoe?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I can’t. I suppose if you locked me in a room with a deerskin, needle and cord, I’d come up with some sort of mocassin thingie. About 12 yrs ago, we started a quest to buy American whenever possible. Shoes were the hardest thing of all. There are a few companies with factories in the […]

Sock it to me….

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Hey look, it’s a sock! Very dark in this artful sock on sheet presentation! The real color is “Pines” a varigated dk green and navy yarn. I thought the hardest part would be making the heel. Yes, that was hard. To my surprise, the toe is hard too. Consider your sock, the toe has to […]

Dog Days….

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

I grew up around dogs. I don’t understand people who don’t like them. I’m not saying don’t be afraid of a strange dog- never get in the face of a dog you don’t know! When we finally had a house with a yard, I couldn’t wait to get a dog. Some people want patio furniture, […]

another sleepy dusty Delta day….

I’ve been thinking a lot about Ode to Billie Joe lately.  I can’t believe it was FORTY years ago this summer, this song burst forth. Our  ”Summer of Love” with a sidetrip to Mississippi! What Bobbie Gentry wrote is nothing less than a gothic tale. We’ll always wonder what was thrown off […]

Caveat emptor

One of the things I was wrong about under Life in General was Economics. Mike got his technical training, got a good job with a large company and good benefits.  He was supposed to work a certain number of years, then we could retire and run around in an RV like our parent’s generation.

unfinished things….

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

It’s starting to look like I won’t be able to finish The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I’m on page 136 and there’s a couple hundred pages to go. Problem is the library got it on interlibrary loan, and it can’t be renewed. So I’ll have to decide if it’s worth ordering through Amazon- I can […]

there’s always an exception….

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

I got to thinking about my ancient grandmother Hattie. “Ancient” because she was born in 1873.  On the Today show and similar programs obesity is always discussed as a threat to longevity and I heard the phrase “there are no fat 80 yr olds” Well, come to think of it Hattie was a big old lady! […]

I want more!

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Can’t believe this was the last Harry Potter book. To be fair, we the readers weren’t the ones under the microscope- coping with deadlines, criticism and all the rumors -JK Rowling had that job. Well, perhaps she’ll take the kids and go on an extended holiday. But she’s a writer and the bug will probably […]

Baking with Harry Potter

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

In between chapters of HP and the Deathly Hollows, I got an urge for something fresh baked. For Christmas in July, I present: The Summer Stollen! It’s a country white bread recipe with a mere 1/3 c.  sugar, eggs, a little butter and 1 c. of golden raisin/dried cherries mix. When they were done, I glazed the […]
