unfinished things….

It’s starting to look like I won’t be able to finish The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I’m on page 136 and there’s a couple hundred pages to go. Problem is the library got it on interlibrary loan, and it can’t be renewed. So I’ll have to decide if it’s worth ordering through Amazon- I can get it used for $3/4. If I were forced to write a paper on it in an upper division English class, I would write about the theme of conformity and the English ruling class. I swear this book probably spawned communists! So much emphasis on form, saying the right thing, wearing the right thing. You have a landholder who’s job is to ride around and bark orders at “the workers” Might as well call them the serfs. The class conscious attitude prevails- that the poor folks aren’t quite as human and not worthy of description.  The women are vapid  little dips that spin webs of gossip and obsess on themselves. Like a whole book full of Paris Hiltons. Maybe I’ll try to find some commentary and read that. I want to know if anybody ever  breaks out of that mold and becomes a “real”  person.

Brought to you by the letter J  It’s my online friend Judy’s birthday today. We met in an AOL chatroom better than 10 yrs ago! I also heard from Juli today in exotic far off Kansas, that she and Keith are getting married. Jul is a single mom and Keith lost his first wife to cancer a couple of years ago-  so this is a new beginning and the founding of a big Brady-bunch style new family. Mazel Tov to them!

She KNITS   The sock is coming along-just finished the cuff and starting the heel. That’s going to be the hard part. I’m not taking a picture until the heel is done. The exciting part about this (exciting socks?) is that I’m learning how to make something for myself! I don’t wear sweaters much. But socks are a real problem because even my feet are plus sized.  I’ve had to buy what fits and never get the pretty colors- potential solution to the problem.

Oh- back to books- I’ve decided to get some books on CD from the library. That way when it’s leisure time, I can knit and still enjoy a book! First choice- if I can find it- is Heinlein’s Stranger In A Strange Land  It’s been 40 yrs since I read it and want to see how it holds up.
