Sock it to me….

sock.jpg Hey look, it’s a sock! Very dark in this artful sock on sheet presentation! The real color is “Pines” a varigated dk green and navy yarn. I thought the hardest part would be making the heel. Yes, that was hard. To my surprise, the toe is hard too. Consider your sock, the toe has to taper down, be stitched at the end, and not lumpy or bumpy. I’ll get there. Then I have to make another one just like it! I am motivated though. After two cataract operations, Mike had visual issues with finding two dark matching socks in the drawer. So we moved away from a whole drawer of black socks,  and I started buying him all these amazing LOUD socks- like panda bears, checks, flamingos, etc. They cost upwards of $8 a pair, without quality most of the time, so they wear out in a few months.  I’d like to find a good “breathable” yarn and then I can knit him red, yellow, maybe even stripe socks. But I have to master that first sock. Onward!

IN THE NEWS:  I just read that Tom Snyder died. He was a popular news anchor in LA in the 70s; hip witty and smart! Later he became a late-night talk show host. Always smoking- but what got him at age 71 wasn’t lung disease- it was leukemia.

Brooke Shields already used it as the title of her book, but if I wrote a book about this phase of my life I’d want to call it “Down Came The Rain” It’s like I’m looking at the horizon and it’s very dark and a storm is coming. (oh- so gloomy) First there’s a sprinkle and then it starts hitting you pretty regularly. Death has been like that for my generation. Loss of a parent, an accident, an untimely illness, a favorite actor. Now, almost every day a neighbor my age, or a part of our culture is in the paper.  Spouses, best friends. Ten/Fifteen years from now, the rain will be a monsoon.  For us, it means our time in this life is ending. For our children,so many coming to us later in life, it will be a deluge. The kids now with happy news of weddings and babies, will be smacked with funerals every time they turn around. I suppose there will be a few to say, “Well thank God, THEY’RE gone”  ;-) Don’t worry, we’ll be back.  Seriously, if a young person asked me for career advice, I’d say anything to do with aging or memorials at this point.

I’m going to burn a CD of all my favorite music, btw.

Well, in lighter news, fellow Cal State Long Beach graduate, Steve Martin has married again. He’s 61, she’s 35.  If they have kids, we might see a 70 yr old Steve at the playground with the babies. Fine, enjoy.

Showing my own bias here. I had an old father, more like a grandfather.  It was weird. I had to deal with an aging parent when I was a teenager! I do believe there’s an age when it’s too old to be a new parent. I’d say over 50.   To everything there is a season….

I’m listening to a book:  Forever Odd by Dean Koontz. So far 6 of 7 Cd’s - unabridged! I got this off the box of the CDs: “Odd Thomas always lives between two worlds in the small town of Pico Mundo. …Odd never asked to communicate with the dead- it’s something that just happened. But as the unofficial goodwill ambassador between our world and theirs, he’s got a duty to do the right thing. “ Parts are scary and parts are hilarious. I really like Dean Koontz!

Thank you for reading this La Dia de los Muertos post. Come to the kitchen I’ll get some skull candy for you!  ;-)  Love, Dorie
