Can YOU make a shoe?

I can’t. I suppose if you locked me in a room with a deerskin, needle and cord, I’d come up with some sort of mocassin thingie. About 12 yrs ago, we started a quest to buy American whenever possible. Shoes were the hardest thing of all. There are a few companies with factories in the US, but they tend to make work boots or cowboy boots made of “exotic” leather like rattlesnake (eewww!)  All the athletic shoes are imported. There are very well made shoes from Europe that cost upwards of $200 a pair; Jimmy Choos are like $600 pr.  But everything in the affordable range, like Nike or Rockport, is now made in China. That said, what is the difference between the $90 Nike and the “generic” shoe that might sell for $30? We buy a lot from Blair and they have a black oxford that resembles Rockport for $29. I sent Mike the link to let him look it over. I think his first choice would be zippy sneakers in RED, but I can’t find him any! I would like those  light-ups the little girls wear Or heelies!  ;-)  Who decided grown-ups didn’t want fun shoes?

I’ve decided next time I need shoes I’m getting the 2 strap Birkenstock sandals. They seem to last about five years. Besides, as Robert Klein noted, if you wear sandals and socks (as you would in winter) people think you’re European- cool.
