Spice Girl
Have you seen the ad McCormick spice company has been running? It’s about old spices hanging around our cupboards. http://www.mccormick.com/content.cfm?ID=11985 I have a couple that are more than 20 years old- because I remember buying them when we lived in the townhouse! I think part of the problem is the packages are too big. They’re pricey so we hate to throw them out. I know the last time I made pickles, the spices cost more than $10. Now, I have tons of allspice berries, turmeric, cinnamon sticks, etc. left over and the pickles were eaten long ago! Spices for households should be sold in little vials; a couple of tablespoons at a time. That way, old faded spice isn’t hanging around the house. Today, the cabinet with the spices is going to get purged! Then a little bread making- I’m thinking one plain country white and one cinnamon apple!
Update: I’m reading While I Live by John Marsden. He wrote a whole series of books beginning with Tomorrow When the War Began about life for a group of young people in Australia. One day, a large powerful Asian country, whose name is never given, invades! This Tomorrow Series is brilliant and there are seven books in the series. A case of a book described as for young adults that adults of any age can appreciate. While I Live is a book about one of the characters in the Tomorrow series later on, so it makes sense to read the series first.
ON TV! Masterpiece Theatre started a great little series last night. It’s called The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard about a modern British woman, a supermarket manager!, who decides to run for a seat in the House of Commons. Catch it next week, it’s really good!
Crochet: The stripey scalloped (see Sept. 30 post) afghan is enormous! It’s really like the afghan for two, since I’m making it as a topper for our bed. I might have it done by the end of the week. It was designed as a practical stash buster to get use out of all that acrylic yarn hanging around here. Worsted weight is heavy- I think this one will have to go in the “double loader” at the laundromat for washing. Then I have a new stash of nice wool and brightly colored sock yarns just waiting for work over the Winter!
Just a note about the weather. It’s ridiculously warm. The forecast says perhaps 84 degrees here, and it’s October 22. If this keep up, the fish will be able to spend the winter in their little pond.

Every now and then I take a look in our cupboard at the spices and I just have to shiver. My wife does a lot of baking, so some of those things go quite quickly. I know we have other spices in there that are over 20 years old. I like your idea of selling these things in smaller containers.
