The Bread That Never Flopped!

I would like to write a rave review for a cookbook published in 1963. The McCalls Cookbook, as written by their food editors for Random House. As background for younger people, McCall’s was a very popular “women’s” (meaning family, cooking, home & life) magazine for decades. The McCall’s dress patterns still for sale was adjunct to the magazine. In every magazine, way back when, there was a page with the adventures of a paper doll- Betsy McCall. So I got a page in the magazine to cut up and play with.  Anyhow, back to the cookbook. Everything I’ve ever made out of it has come out just fine.  Basic American cooking, with ingredients from the supermarket.  The bread recipe has never let me down (which is a bread pun, come to think of it!).  When I get overly creative, the bread flops. But when I go back to McCall’s Basic White Bread, and measure accurately, no problemo! There are later editions, published in the 70s and 80s, but I’ve never used them. This one’s cover comes in a few different colors: mine is trendy avocado green. It  sells on Ebay and Amazon marketplace quite often.  If you see one in a used bookstore, or out yard saleing, assuming you’d like a new cookbook, snare it!

My mom would only bake bread on a sunny day, she claimed her bread never turned out as good on a gloomy rainy day. Maybe it didn’t rise as well or something. I sure miss her bread and buns.

    Have yourself a scarey Halloween…BOO!
