OH, I wish I was here:
This is the Bosque Del Apache Wildlife Reserve about 125 miles S. of Albuquerque. Lots of migratory birds- ducks, geese, and most specially, cranes spend their winters here. It was “created” in 1939,when foresighted people realized that diverting the water along the Rio Grande through irrigation and dam construction, was hurting, perhaps driving the cranes into extinction.
They’re doing a great job snapping back- all they needed was their wetlands! We were there, not nearly long enough, in 2000. I have never seen so many birds in one place ever. I’d like to go back (soon!) and maybe stay at a motel nearby to get there early in the morning for the flyout!
We had a couple of cameras with us and shot a ton of pictures. I love this quartet lined up for their picture:
(click on the pic, it gets bigger!)
When we go again, I’m going to bring a tape recorder. What you can’t imagine without video is the sound. Thousands of birds just being birds. It was so neat!

I went passing through that area back in June. After 8 months in Utah, New Mexico was a welcome relief. What a beautiful area that was and the people were just unbelievably friendly.
