Living on Dairy Time

I don’t sleep worth a damn anymore. Maybe six hours on a good night- not counting every stupid thing that wakes me up. Add to that, I haven’t made the “shift” to Standard Time. I start nodding off about 8 p.m. It balances out; figuring the rest of the world goes to bed by 11 and gets up at 6. Yesterday morning, I was up (for the day!) at 3:30. I could have been out milking cows if we had any! Instead, I snag a couple of hours of quiet and knit or read. I have a vintage Sony Walkman, so I can sit and knit with the headphones on.  I’ve written about this before, but part of the reason I listen to the radio at night is because it’s comforting to hear other people. It’s creepy being up when even the dogs are snoring away!

Developing Story:  So I was listening to Coast2CoastAM the other night. One of the things they do very well on this show is pick up on stories well before the networks. I once heard an extreme weather expert talking about what a major disaster would ensue if a big hurricane hit New Orleans. Then it did. Coast covered the selling of American seaports to foreign countries  first. Last year, they covered the bee colony collapses. The other night,  George Noory, the C2C host, was talking about a story they’re following that there is a rise in heart disease deaths in children. Kids not born with a heart defect or other illness. Okay, so I Googled around and found mention several places of “Myocarditis”  Infection/Inflammation of the heart. Here’s an article:http://www.montereyherald.com/ci_7578354?source=rss&nclick_check=1  The bad news is, it’s viral. Something probably mutated and this is scary.

What’s Cooking:  The ham bone. I set it to boiling once and poured off that water to get rid of some of the fat and salt. Now it’s heating up again and it’s going to be split pea soup for lunch! I don’t puree it into green mush. I add diced carrots, potatoes, etc and let them cook along with the peas- so it’s sort of split pea stew. Not bad at all!

Matt Damon, Sexiest Man Alive? Oh heck no! The sexiest man alive since about 1961 is Sean Connery. And when he passes on he will become sexiest man of the 20th Century. There’s just no comparison.

Books: I’m reading Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult. How do you recommend a book without spoiling it for the next reader? Carefully I guess.  It’s about a grown woman who finds out that as a small child her non-custodial father kidnapped her. She has another name, and a mother still alive she has thought dead for 28 years. A good read.

Link of the Day:  Check out Global Disease Distribution. And stay away from Nebraska- what’s going on there?????
Mike and I are lucky duckies. I’ve managed to buy both brands of ground beef recently recalled- Topps and the one from Wisconsin. I would never eat pink meat- not even a tasty steak and that probably keeps us healthy. We learned the hard way. About ten years ago, our daughter was hospitalized with a galloping bacterial infection, probably e-coli. Our very smart doctor took one look at her and said, “this is not good, I’m admitting her” It could have been so much worse. So thank you, Dr. Ashburn!
But if this keeps up, we might turn vegetarian.
