Keeping faith

Horrors! I’m going to talk about politics! (a bit) For disclosure purposes- I’m a registered Libertarian. I paraphrase Tevye from “Fiddler On The Roof”:
God Bless and Keep the Government…Far Away From Me

I am totally impressed with the idealism and dedication of Ron Paul’s supporters.  For the most part they’re the young, well-educated adults raised by my generation (I’m so proud of you!) He’ll probably make over $20 million in donations for the quarter by Midnight- New Years Eve and all. Yet he’s a footnote on the network news.

Very often in national elections over the last couple of decades, the only candidates that sound sensible are the 3rd party candidates. The two parties spit at each other in elections, give nice speeches and very little changes year to year. I’m interpreting Ron Paul’s support as hope for change.

I like him, but to vote for him in the primary, I would have had to reregister as GOP, and I’m never going to join Nixon’s party! (it’s a grudge thing)  Come November I can vote for anybody I want!

Dear Young People, I hate to tell you, but the best you can hope for this year is, voting as a block, you will make a statement.  There would have to be some sort of major scandal/disaster to keep the two party machine from cranking on. The worst/best case scenario is Paul’s supporters will pull away enough votes that the “winner” in November will creep in with less than a clear majority of the vote, like 1992. I wish we had a landslide result, a candidate who pulled in 65-70% of the vote. Starting with a whole lot of happy voters, yeah! Seems like so long since that’s happened. I remember after the 2000 election some of my younger co-workers were so disheartened at the result. As consolation I’d say having lived through several administrations where my candidate lost, for better or worse we’ve survived.

But you have established yourselves. Whatever happens in November, hang tight. You have a big block of people and well-defined objectives. Take it to Congress. Run for local elections. I don’t think much of either major political party these days. I’d welcome new ideas, and a different system.

Oh- have fun at the World of Warcraft for Ron Paul event tonight! ;-)
