California Dreaming
The news outlets are talking about the big storms hitting the West Coast this weekend. Back when I lived there I recall that the only time we’d ever get a big rain was January/February. I remember times when it came down in sheets with lots of thunder and lightning too. It happened infrequently, so to us kids, it was a big scary deal. Invariably there would be bad mudslides where there had been fires a few months earlier. So friends out there, I hope you’re safe and dry where you’re at.
It’s Here At Last! And it’s cheaper than an I-Phone. For some time now I’ve been wishing that laptop computers were just a bit smaller; about the size of our portable DVD player. I saw this gizmo on the Today show recently and I really like it: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31uj4oVJ8EL._SS500_.jpg (says it’s #49 in computer sales on Amazon) The Asus eeE pc costs around $300! A 7″ screen and weighs 2 pounds! Small enough that I could knit it a cover and carry it in a purse! It’s got Wifi, so I could tote my little pc around and use it anywhere just like the big laptops. Or a businessman could stow it in his briefcase. No machine is perfect- it’s preloaded with Linux, which all the academic computer people love, but I’ve always played on the Windows playground. And gee, no DVD drive! But if there’s a small device like an I-pod that would hold several movies and just plug into the little pc, then no problem. If they get really popular I’m sure they’ll get even cheaper.
Cheating a little: I’m on the first front side of the vest, but just itchin’ to do something a bit for complicated. So I got out my lovely Sirdar pink yarn and cast on a sock- just a little wavy thing! So my good intention is to work on the vest watching tv, etc, where it’s mostly back and forth knitting to get the garment to size. Then spend a little while each day with the more complicated sock pattern.
I’m reading entertaining fluff. It’s called The Fudge Cupcake Murder The amateur sleuth is Hannah who’s a young single gal that runs a dessert bakery. So every book comes with recipes. I think they must be really good recipes too because just looking at them I can tell they’re appallingly unhealthy: Like a cookie recipe that uses 4 sticks of butter! I bake for the holidays or birthdays, but I just can’t the rest of the year. I have no resistance for goodies at all. I’m a bit better with store bought- like granola bars, so that’s what we have around for treats most of the time.
Slow Blogging Day, How about a Saint? I missed 2 of the more famous saints last week- St. Genevieve and Mother Seton There are several today. I picked out
St. Wiltrudis, who lived in the 9th century. Not tortured or martyred-good. She’s reported to have been the widow of a Bavarian duke who become a nun and founded a convent. Revered for her goodness and skills at manual arts.
