Blasted!

entschede.jpgThis is a storm bearing down on a city in Holland in 2004- terrifying!

It was a dark and stormy morning. Wednesday around 5 a.m. a ginourmous thunderstorm came rolling through the Rochester New York area. I imagine it was what the weather people call a “microburst”. There were wind gusts up to 75 mph. Tractor trailers on the Interstate were turned over. At the airport, a gust lifted up and slammed back down a “parked” commuter jet, damaging it. Over 100,000 residences were without power on Wednesday.

It took a toll on the Duchy of Techno, home to my web server and systems administrators. The roof was damaged-the wind sent shingles flying. All is well now because they contacted a roofer right away and the repairs were made yesterday! It could have been much worse, because their property backs to a “green space” with 50 ft tall plus trees. I understand the wind noise was terrifying.

So far down here in Maryland, it’s mild as winters go. If we’re going to get a big snow event, they usually come end of January or first weeks of February. I’ll be surprised if it happens. We seem to be getting “the tail end” of a lot of storm systems, but it’s been just warm enough that we’re getting rain, not ice. Good.
Watching the weather last Friday, it looked like a hurricane was going to hit the Pacific Northwest! I always thought that was a place where it rained a lot, but not these big monsoons with tornados in Washington state.!

In other terrifying news: A yucky trend- delousing salons!  There’s one in Chicago, called “Hair Fairies” and you bring your child in for special treatments and nitpicking. Oh….my….god! I suppose it beats dousing your kid with poisons that don’t work. I guess the bugs are smart and developing resistance to the usual treatments. There’s a lot to be said for fine toothed combs- morning and night. In the not too distant past, people didn’t go anywhere without a head covering. I wonder if it will get to the point that kids in school will wear shower caps to keep the bugs off!

Film: We watched 10,000 Black Men Named George An interesting true story. It’s about the Pullman railroad car attendants and their struggle to get a union going in the 1920’s. They were addressed as “George” after Mr. Pullman. So to get someone’s attention, a passenger would say, “Oh George” Not even a name tag, so it wasn’t much better than “Hey You, Boy” It was a good film. I like stories where people finally get some justice.

We’ve had a really strange winter here in Michigan. First of all, we have had just one ice storm after another. We usually get one or two per winter, but this year we have already had 4 of them and it is only January. We’ve also had two major snow storms which is a little more than we have seen in the last 15 years.

For the last week or so, we have had just an absolute deluge of rain. Rivers are on the verge of flooding and there is more rain in the forecast. Been thinking about building an ark.
