Send help, Martha!
Our kitchen has bad karma. I look at pictures of decorator kitchens and get the blues: http://www.kitchenandhome.net/nss-folder/gallery/smith2.jpg
Part of it is that everything is old. I don’t mind the avocado counters. It’s called sage now, and it’s popular again.
When we moved in the cabinets were dark cherry and the finish had seen better days. We repainted them with white enamel- nice, but the insides are still dark- so it’s like going into the black hole of Calcutta to pull out the big bread bowl! Also since the house was built in the early 1970’s, the builder didn’t anticipate the explosion of kitchen gadgets! There isn’t enough counter space! I have appliances I like and use often: toaster, blender, food processor, a huge, well-loved bread machine- even a George Foreman grill! The microwave is on a cart next to the kitchen counter. My working “style” is I like things in sight and at hand. (When I was a secretary, my desktop always looked like hell.) The waffle iron, food processor and George’s grill are put away in the cabinet under the counter, but I miss them! I’d love to have a KitchenAid, but so far I’ve resisted because of space issues.
My conflict is, I like a country style. I have a big rooster cookie jar, pottery canisters and cute things. I want to sit by the sunny window and drink my tea in a kitchen full of color, cute rugs, etc. Like a country cottage. But all my “power tools” make it sound like my kitchen should be laid out like a restaurant.
Is there a decorator style, shabby industrial????
The Grand Duchess has offered to come visit and help me do a small makeover. It needs it. I’m thinking that maybe what I can do is cozy up the eat-in kitchen, and at the same time, declutter and organize the actual cooking area. I’m thinking a sunny yellow or peachy paint. The bow window has hideous plastic vertical blinds- it needs curtains. A hutch or a dry sink would be neat too.
Oh boy, I’m going to poke around in catalogs!

We have done a lot of work on our old house, but the kitchen is the last room we will tackle. It is going to take a complete tear out. Nothing else will do. I can’t believe how expensive cabinets are.

I love country too!! Richard got me a cabinet at Lowes for my stuff on the counter. They are easy to get to and not in the way when not in use. I’ve got a great web site for rugs. They only charge 2.95 for mail. I got a new bathroom carpet. Where did you hear about this money. Doris
