Long time to make up my mind

I’m not sure who I’m going to vote for November.
I grew up in a blue-collar family. Everybody we knew voted with the Democrats. Maybe it was because of Chicago in 1968; after that things started changing. Joan_Baez_Bob_Dylan.jpgI was in high school, but I remember watching the nomination handed over to Hubert Humphrey (who hadn’t won a single voted in delegate). Then there were Mayor Daley’s cops whomping on the people outside, who were chanting, “the whole world is watching” Also, in those days, the Southern Racists voted Democratic. George Wallace was a Democrat.
But still, I didn’t see the Republican party doing much for the little people, so at 18 I registered with the Democrats. I voted for McGovern. I voted for Jimmy Carter. Twice. Then the 1984 election rolled around. We had bought our first house, I was able to stay home with a toddler because Mike had a good job and we were even able to put a little money in the bank (at like 7-8% interest!) Come time to vote, I thought, honest to Pete we are a whole lot better off then we had been in 1976, when Carter was elected- so I broke with tradition and voted for Ronald Reagan’s second term.

The other day I realized I haven’t voted for the Democratic presidential candidate since then. Last time, I voted for the Libertarian candidate. I blamed Cheney and Halliburton and that moneyed ilk, for the mess in Iraq. Now, I’ll blame the President too- since he was dumb enough to lead the country into this mess!

I heard on the news the other day that we’ll probably be in Afghanistan until 2025. I don’t get it, Does it have gold, or oil? Maybe it’s the location of Satan’s secret porthole from Hell? I wish to point out that the cost, loss of life, and perception by the rest of the world as being the aggressor over there in 1980, played a large part in the fall of the Soviet Union. And we want to stay over there because????

The long primary season is a mistake.
We’ve still got over six months and I’m well and truly sick of the election, no matter who wins. You need my cynical old vote- don’t make me get disgusted and stay home this year. Hillary Clinton has been campaigning for years. Folks, they made their plans 30 years ago!
Oh! I never told you what I thought after I finished the book, Hillary’s Choice. Well, she’s smart and competent. If elected she could do a good job. But in the past she’s been dishonest. I think she has a twisted, codependent relationship with Bill. Very easily she or Bill could get involved in another crooked deal, or another sex scandal. I base that on past performance;they haven’t changed. She reminds me a lot of Richard M. Nixon- same kind of smart person with dauntless ambition. I ain’t gonna vote for her!

Anyhow, with weeks to go with yet another primary Clinton and Obama continue to tear away at each other. (Mostly on the HRC side, btw) Guys, Gal- don’t do too good a job. We might figure out we don’t want either one of you! Senator McCain is listening and he’s getting months to get ready for debating this Fall. Senator, if you read this blog- (yeah right) um, give Colin Powell a call and see if he’d like to take a ride ;-)

On to other things:Last night we watched the first series of a British production, “Doc Martin” Pretty good. It’s about a former surgeon, who’d lost his nerve, throws up at the sight of blood, and is making a new start in general practice in a little town full of quirky people., It was made in 2004, and I enjoyed looking at contemporary life in the UK. (I’d like to come visit but with this exchange rate crisis, probably not anytime soon) I’m so used to watching James Herriot riding around in 1930’s Yorkshire. Wow, they use computers and drive Japanese cars just like us. ;-) This show takes place in Cornwall, but we spent most of the first episode, trying to figure out where they were. They shot it on bright, sunny days and I thought it was Australia!
