Woodstock for Birds….
It’s overcast, about 45 and drizzly all day today. I was sitting by the kitchen window doing a bit of paper work. The window looks out over the deck. Maybe it was the weather, but we had quite a crowd at the bird feeders today. In no more than a half hour all these different birdies cruised by: Nuthatches, Tufted Titmouse (titmice?), Brown Wrens, Purple Finches, Woodpeckers- Downy and Red Bellied, Chickadees, Sparrows, Eastern Bluebird (that same one- he likes us, he really does!) Cardinals, Mourning Doves, Crows (thieving magpies!) and the occasional squirrel! I try to chase the squirrels away. I wouldn’t mind them having a snack, but they load up their little cheek pouches until the feeder is empty and tell all their friends where they can get free vittles! Later in the afternoon a pair of American Goldfinches dropped by.![]()
Mr. & Mrs. Goldfinch- taken by Ken Thomas, who graciously released it to public domain-thanks!
Must be mating season or something! Now I’m inspired to set out some new kind of seed and see if it attracts even more and different birds. But I won’t put out thistle, which is officially a “noxious weed” in Maryland; meaning we don’t need more of them. Thistles really hurt if you step on one in the grass!
Oddly enough no Orioles. They’re all down in Baltimore because it’s opening day! ![]()
