“Will Sit for Duck!”

tesvera307.jpg Pirate Mike and I never decided that we would grow up and become prototypical Baby Boomers. We’re just cruising through life pursuing liberty and happiness.  Coming along in the middle of the Boom as we did, it seems like every move we’ve made on Life’s great journey, somebody else our age is doing the same thing about the same time. A lot of somebodies as a matter of fact.

As part of the pursuit of happiness, we’ve always had pets: guinea pigs, tropical fish, etc. No cats though- Mike is allergic. Then we had a human child and devoted most of our nurturing energy into our offspring. And we saw people our age all over the place with kids too! Now she’s married to the Grand Duke, and lives in a distant land (New York anyhow). Since she’s left the nest, it’s funny how the dogs transformed from our lovable pets, to our foster children.
Now everywhere we go I see gray haired moms and dads with their dog kids too. Another trend! And I’ve heard on the news that having a little pet buddy keeps you healthy!

We’ve had VeraWang for two years. Our late Shar Pei, Hercules, was the Albert Einstein of dogs. But Vera is pretty smart too, so I’m thinking that all Pei’s are brainiacs. Tesla, my big happy oaf, is loud and hyper and doesn’t know that he’s not very bright. But Tes is always obedient. He reminds me of that sign, “Lord help me to be the person my dog thinks I am” because he loves me to death.
Vera is smart and quiet and never does a thing she’s told to do. She’s the Secret Agent Emma Peel of the dog world. I’ve pointed out to Mike on numerous occasions that Vera has him totally wrapped around her little paw finger.

We’re working on a “behavior” as they say over at Sea World. If she doesn’t obey for anything else, she can darn well learn to sit for a treat! One of the things I’ll do is buy a small can of exotic pet food for their treat. They tried pheasant and buffalo last week. (no kidding! I forget the brand name, but it costs only $1.19 a can and the labels even say it’s Kosher!) When I offer them a goodie, Tes will flop down and wait patiently. The little Queen meanwhile, will sort of pantomime sitting down. She’ll start to sit, and then get up again quickly. Like she knows it’s a subservient position, and she doesn’t want her royal tukas on the floor!
Today’s big treat was a little package of duck for each of them. (the Caesar brand food- comes in little square packages of assorted critters) I had to say “Sit” five times before she stayed on the floor long enough to convince me she would appreciate her duck snack. (don’t feel bad, it wasn’t Daffy- it was anonymous dinner duck!)

That little dog wants to rule this house. She probably thinks of us as “the fools who feed me”

Cranky Shopping! They have been remodeling my grocery store of choice the last few weeks. Every time I go in, the merchandise is swapped around. It’s driving me nuts. I’d rather they closed the store for a week and got it all done. I don’t go there for a scavenger hunt. Today I’d intended to get the marketing done, but when I got there, they’d moved the bread again! And I haven’t a clue where the soda got to. So I put my cart back and left in a grumpy mood. Too bad I didn’t run into the manager because I was just frustrated enough to let him have it! We’re going to have Chinese take out tonight anyhow, so I’ll just make do. Tomorrow I’ll go to the other store that hasn’t decided to move all the stuff around.
