“Girl Friday”

Hi- not a lot of blogging inspiration. I think it’s because it’s the first truly Spring day- temperature about 75! I just want to goof off. Got the back door open and the dogs are out on the deck warming their bones.

I was checking the “breaking news” in the local newspaper and we are having a real crime wave of embezzlement! A head teller at a bank near here was just arrested for stealing over a million $$$ in the past three years! To quote Sgt. Foley from the movie “An Officer And A Gentleman”, “there’s always one joker that thinks he’s smarter than me” That seems to be the problem, some people get around money and think they can come up with a scheme that hasn’t been tried before.

We’ve had three “jokers” around here in recent years. The first one was a secretary at my daughter’s high school. She kept double books and stole over $200,000. It was her responsibility to deposit the money made from fundraising by the clubs, band, athletic events etc. Lots of cash- so she skimmed. She was arrested two years ago; after my daughter had graduated. We were talking about it, and she recalled that when she was in the band, they never understood why they were always so short of money, given all the pizza sales, gift wrap drives. etc. Because a thief was helping herself!

Then last year, a woman in another county was caught stealing from her employer-over $100,000. Wouldn’t ya know she also volunteered to take care of the money for the PTA and a cub scout troop? So all together she got over $200,000. She recently pled guilty. Hasn’t been sentenced yet. The school secretary got 5 years with time suspended and five years probation; she’s supposed to pay the money back. I don’t know how it’s possible for a convicted felon to come up with $200,000- sell off the house and cars I suppose. I think they should have her come to the school and apologize to the students in an assembly. But that’s probably cruel and unusual punishment.

This most recent incident, the woman could get 30 years. Stealing from a bank puts you up there with the other Grand Larceners! Given that this “crime of opportunity” keeps occurring, one of these judges is going to throw the book at somebody! It might be her if she’s convicted. (gotta say “if” since there hasn’t been a trial yet- wow, maybe I’ll get on the jury!)

The moral of the story for business owners and managers everywhere- watch that “right hand’ of yours. That indispensable office administrator  might be robbing you blind. Audit your books.
