No Spring!

Just for fun sometime, Google the phrase “What’s happened to Spring?” Lots of people are asking this question. Two weeks ago I was excited because Spring was just around the corner. Actually it was well above freezing, but still rainy and certainly too muddy to garden. I’m not kicking that much. Last summer’s drought was terrible and we needed every bit of it.
What is so rare as a day in June? How about when the June day comes in April! It’s supposed to be 85 degrees here today. It’s very comfortable, but friends, that’s summer weather! It’s the 18th of April. Anniversary of Paul Revere’s ride. Also the average “last frost date” of record here in Maryland. Time to sow a little lettuce, get those ‘taters in the ground. Oh hell no! We’re going to skip over Spring and get right down to Zucchini weather! I won’t be surprised if the Lilac blooms by Monday!

It distresses me when people ridicule the idea of a climate change. It’s not politics; it’s Mother Earth! It all may be part of a cycle longer than any of us have been alive, but everything is changing. I may have to shift my gardening ambitions. Give up on radishes and order some sweet potato sets, or maybe start a peanut crop! It’s like Maryland has stolen Alabama’s climate!

But it’s sunny and warm, so I got out the camera for a little update.
Gardening the easy way! I’ve started a bunch of tomato seedlings which should be ready to plant in 3/4 weeks. But I want some tomatoes NOW, so I bought two in pots. tomatocage.jpgI can, I freeze, we have a food dehydrator; if we end up with too many tomatoes, I can deal. I paid .99 for ONE of those rock hard racquetball hot house tomatoes yesterday. Can’t wait for some homegrown. Also, bought one little 9 pack of cabbage. I’m going to feed ‘em and water ‘em and chase those pesty white cabbage moths away!
The doggies love this warm weather and spend a lot of time soaking up the sunshine. Tesla.jpgTesla is on his last day of a medical marathon. Since the end of January he’s been on antibiotics for Lyme disease. “Aggressive Therapy” as the vet would say. It’s taken a lot out of him. He didn’t have a mild case of Lyme. He was pretty sick and we had to treat him. Tell you what though- I don’t think I’d be able to do it to him again. Just taking the medication was like giving him 14 weeks of stomach flu. I went out and bought him a Zodiac flea and tick collar today. And I’m going to comb him every night. But I think he’s had enough drugs in his system for a couple of months.

My neighbor plowed his field yesterday. This is the view from our backyard. Pretty! I always know when to plant corn. I just wait until they’re planting it behind me!
