Woolstock!

This morning Pyrate Mike and I went to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival.

In Spring, there are lots of community fairs, steam shows, craft exhibits, etc. out our way. Most of them if there’s a few hundred people there on Saturday, it’s a good sized event. Today, was like no other event, sizewise, I’ve experienced- maybe ever. This felt like the Capital Mall on the Fourth of July! Or maybe the Iowa State Fair in 1952! Wow, there was a lot of people there!Woolstock.jpg All that “stuff” in the middle of this picture is people!

I don’t know a Merino from a Romney, but we got up close and personal with some of the providers: sheep.jpgThis lady had a wide noble head and just softer than anything! Petted a few lambs. One was cracking me up because every time he bleated, his whole tongue came out. So instead of “Bah” it was like “Blllaaah!” Cute! I saw some that had dreadlocks- maybe they were Jamaican sheep?

There were a few interlopers hanging around. This lovely llama for one. Maybe he was there to promote Interspecies Understanding!” Now, do llamas have fur, hair or wool?llama.jpg

Lots and lots of yarn for sale. I admired much, but didn’t buy any today. I know a lot of people were having fun adding to their stash, but I really don’t know what I’ll do when it’s time for the next project. Maybe I ought to make a snood? DorieMay08.jpgMy hair always gets to a certain length and goes flat on me, I’m thinking when it gets a little longer I can just pin it up in a bun for “volume”! Or some sort of sun hat so I can “hide” the top?

Since this event is showcasing the industry in Maryland, meat being part of this, there were lots of vendors selling…gulp!….lamb! Kebobs and BBQ and lamb burgers. I’m carnivorous and it sure smelled good, but I absolutely can’t eat something if the live critter is standing there before me! So we ate lunch on the way home.

I think most of the people there today, like me, were there because of our needle arts hobbies. Given the popularity, maybe they’ll add another weekend next year!

Boy am I glad my wife didn’t know about this. If she did I am sure we would be driving half way across the country!

Mike- a couple of times Michael gave me that “this is a chick thing” look of his. I’ll never get him near the event again. I did meet some fuzzy sheep who made their keepers drive them down from Michigan!
