Celluloid Heroes Never Really Die….
I wish my life was non-stop Hollywood movie show
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die
-Ray Davies & The Kinks, 1972
And now Harvey Korman has passed on.
The Lord said there were many mansions, and I like to think there might be some alternate reality where Mr. K can walk through a door and be in Rock Ridge. I have a handful of all-time favorite movies, and Blazing Saddles is right up there. A simple tale of frontier justice, all those narrow-minded Johnsons and wicked, conniving old Heddy-that’s HEDLEY- Lamarr, diabolical hornswoggler! RIP Harvey, thanks for all the laughs!
[I feel a science fiction story coming on- imagine a universe where Eternity is walking in and out of movie scenes: carrying a torch up the hill to Frankenstein's castle, rounding up horses with Roy and Hoppy, or being stuck under the stateroom bunk in A Night At the Opera! hmmmm]
One More Trip Around the Sun: brought to you by the letter “B” and the number 55- Tuesday, was my birthday. Michael surprised me with a knitting book, 101 Designer One Skein Wonders. So nice for both of us. He says he never knows what to get me, but this time he was in the bookstore and said “Dorie likes to knit, I’ll get her a knitting book” Swell! We went out to dinner at Texas Roadhouse, which is consistently good if you happen to be a carnivore. The Duchess is “surprising” me with a shawl, which isn’t quite finished yet. The surprise part is I don’t know what the pattern is. I requested a color- silvery gray, like a beautiful dolphin. I’ll have to dress up and go out more once I own a beautiful shawl!
Note to Dorie (doofus woman)- I don’t have a gallbladder, barely tolerate gluten and seem to be lactose intolerant- so I picked out a store-bought cake with dark blue food coloring. I brought post-birthday gastric misery on myself. Next year, banana bread for everyone!
Project Completed: Now that it’s probably too warm for anything like this, I finished a pair of socks I’m calling “Funfetti”after the party cake with little flecks of color in it.
If you’re interested in the particulars I’m on Ravelry and my “name” there is WombatMD.
No More Hamish Macbeth? OH NOES! We finished watching the DVD of the 3rd series. I’m a little sad. It was fun traipsing around Lochdubh with Hamish and all those fun people. Well, the beauty of it is, there are more than twenty Hamish detective novels to read through, so that will stay off withdrawl for a bit. My other problem is I’ve really hit The Last of the Summer Wine. The good news is, and I’m a bit amazed at this, given the age of some of the characters, I know it’s still on BBC. The bad thing here in North America, is that there’s a package of about 100 “best of” shows being aired and I’ve seen them all at least once! I reward myself like a little kid- get my daily tasks done, and then I can go watch the Britcoms in the afternoon. Today, is scheduled to be the second time I’ve seen Compo’s funeral. My daughter has suggested I start watching Ballykissangel for my daily fix, so I may put that one in the Netflix queue and watch 1 or 2 episodes a day.
Finished reading Girls Like Us a brand-new collective biography of Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon by Sheila Weller. What would a magazine say, “Iconic Trailblazers for women in the male dominated world of rock music” I enjoyed it. Particularly since all three women were songwriters, I enjoy learning what was going on in their lives that was carried over into their music. The first thing to note is they aren’t Boomers; Carly is the youngest and she’ll be 63 next month. So all three of them came out of the folk era-somewhere between the beatniks and the hippies. It takes a while to make it in the business. I was thinking that the women musicians my age, Pat Benatar, Ann Wilson of Heart, for example, like me were kids in school when Joni, Carole & Carly made it big. Tapestry came out the year I graduated high school. Not a generation gap, but kind of a decade gap. So where to millions of women in their mid to late 20’s they were hearing anthems, I was hearing the voices of my big sisters. Madonna, on the other hand, I would have babysat her!

Aquilegia, Columbine, blooming out in the yard!

Aw!!! Really? Harvey Korman? I liked him a lot. He was one of the guys on the Carol Burnett show, right?
