As the Economy sinks into the Sunset….

Watch for falling stockbrokers! Mr. President, Senators and other phony-baloney politicians- y’all better fix this thing soon!

Sunday, Pyrate and I went to lunch in Frederick in honor of his 58th birthday. mmm- meat loaf! Then we took a turn around the mall to walk off the calories. There were people there, but I think a lot of them were doing what we were doing- being social and enjoying their air conditioning, but hardly buying. My old store looked desolate. Use to be on the weekends, every counter in the cosmetic department will have at least one associate working- people picking up birthday gifts, etc. I saw one and he was working men’s, not Clinique or Estee Lauder. So where were all the shoppers? Probably at Wal-Mart and Costco. When things get rough, $28 mascara probably isn’t such a great idea.

Today, I paid an absolutely unbelievable $37 to fill up the Neon! I remember freaking out when it began to cost more than $20 to fill it up a couple of years ago! What it means to me, since I’m a domestic goddess and all, is that this tank of gas has to last at least three weeks. Not that I do a lot of “gallyvanting”, but I’ll probably have to combine all my trips and keep my mileage to 80-100 miles a week. No buses out here.

Latest Apocalyptical Book! It’s called Life As We Knew It by Susan Pfeffer. With my fondness for disaster films and all, I loved the premise. The story takes place in our time. As the story opens the big news is an asteroid is going to hit the moon. Everybody is getting out their telescope, having parties to watch the event. Kind of like we all watched the Hale-Bopp comet back in 1997. Only, in the wink of an eye, everything changed. The asteroid was huge and knocked the Moon out of orbit and closer to Earth. So instantaneously, there were tsunamis, and coastal cities and island nations all over the world vanished. Then, because the moon had a stronger gravitational “pull” , volcanoes started erupting! As for the people, things got pretty dismal. There was a lot of panicking and hoarding, disease and mayhem. It would be a good book for a discussion group- especially to discuss how the people reacted- which wasn’t exactly with love and charity for fellow humans.

Concerned about Vera! The Vet wanted to do a blood profile. The report came back that she has one rather highly elevated liver enzyme, ALT. So the doc wants to check it again in 30 days and see if after treating her allergy miseries this enzyme goes down. What I keep thinking about is one day, we were out and about and a man came up and started petting Vera, remarking about what nice dogs they were. He said his daughter had once had two SharPei’s but both had died young. Um- not the first time I’ve heard a story like that. There’s something called SharPei fever out there, also a very serious disorder, amyloidosis- which I refer to as that terrible illness that starts with “A” In the meantime, she’s happy, she’s eating well (enjoying that deer dog food!) and scrapping with Tesla as usual. As my late brother used to say, “I have no illusions”. Bad stuff can happen with any dog. With the dear Peibies, it’s like a roll of the dice.
