Stealth Pancake

Sunday is pancake day around here. All other days we have cereal or toast, but on Sunday, I like to make some sort of real breakfast. Today, Pyrate said I shouldn’t make pancakes because Vera couldn’t have any! Hello? Puppy dog- not supposed to eat pancakes anyhow! Well, as it transpired, Mike slept in. The dogs thought it was a good idea, so they joined him. So without making a fuss about it, I cooked the pancakes. Then I sat at the kitchen table instead of taking them in the living room and watching TV and had my breakfast! I even saved some for d’hubby. Then I fed Vera her official stuff. Offered a dish of food to Tesla, who ignored it, so I took it back up. He likes to steal stuff, so he ate the little bit Vera left in her bowl and that seemed to hit the spot for him. When Mike woke up, I heated his pancakes up in the microwave, so we managed to have them without tormenting the canines too much. Don’t worry about Tesla- he has this way of letting me know he’s hungry. They have steel bowls and he’ll pick his up and start throwing it on the floor- that means he’s ringing the dinner gong!

I’ve been looking at clothes online today. There’s a reason American women my age wear crop pants and t-shirts everywhere- it’s hard to find anything else! If you look at the websites for the major department stores, all the dresses are “young” and truth to tell, cocktail dresses. Not “mom” clothes at all! Maybe the hip 35 year old mom, but not the 55 yr old kind!  I don’t know any lady body builders and most women over 30 I know are self-conscious about their arms. So why are so many dresses sleeveless? To support the shrug and bolero industry? One of my shopping stops today was looking at the “salwar kameez” styles and kurtas that come from India. That’s a very hot, humid part of the world. And the women dress with style and sensibility! Which reminded me I have a couple of rayon dresses from India in the closet. I put one on and I’m all girly and comfortable today!

Hope the garden blogging isn’t boring!  Lots of good things have been growing away. The other day I was pulling weeds and accidentally pulled up a potato and found out they are “edible” size. So Friday, I dug up one plant. There were four huge sized red potatoes and a lot of the kind you’d see at the store labeled “new potatoes”  So we had potatoes for two meals off the one plant. I’ve been gathering things as they ripen and fixing them. Yesterday, we had cucumber, onion and one tomato salad! Yesterday I blanched and cut on 1 1/2 heads of cabbage and put it on to dehydrate. Dehydrated cabbage is sad. It turns into brittle crunchy stuff. But the plan is to have some for this winter. We are a long way from self-sufficient, but it’s a real kick to be able to put together a meal with ingredients I put in the ground myself!

Oh Pyrate said the tone of my last entry was threatening. Didn’t mean to be. What I meant was to say, “hey Leaders, the economy is tanking, so lead us out of it!” I think we’re already in a Recession, but it’s an odd one. It bothers me to no end to go to the market and see every single thing I want to buy going up in price. Just yesterday I had to reject buying a $7 watermelon!
