Here’s the latest round of harvest from the garden!
Let’s see- I went outside to get some potatoes. I pulled up 1 1/2 plants and got about a dozen potatoes. They’re redskin variety. Four are huge and the rest are smallish and will made nice additions to salad. There’s about a dozen tomatoes- most of which will get chopped up to make another bowl of salsa. I don’t need chips- I eat it with everything. I heated up a little bit and served with omelets for breakfast this a.m. The onions are small yet, but they’ll be in the salsa too. A handful of dinky beets. Those pesky cucumbers fooled me again. Two days ago they were too small to pick. Today they’re giant kosher dill size! And there are SEVEN of them. What’s going to happen is they’ll be diced up and made into bread and butter pickles- our favorite. One zucchini I’ll stash for soup later in the week. And oh yeah, two non-imported jalapeno peppers- just enough heat for the salad bowl. So that’s the produce report for today!
Knitting funk! A little bit. Can’t decide what to do next. I’ve been crocheting a triangular shawl, but it’s a bit boring- just mesh. Don’t tell Pyrate, but I’m looking around for some radical socks. He likes ones with outrageous designs- so blue and yellow stripes, or skull & bones socks- he’d love that! What I haven’t done so far, is come up with some ideas for little Christmas ornaments, etc. In the Fall, there are craft sales put on by area churches, school groups, etc. It usually costs $20 or so to get table space and then you can sell your wares. Sounds like a fun thing to do! But I need some wares! When I was a kid, I made potholders with a loop loom and sold them door to door for a quarter!
We’ve been watching Bramwell. It’s a British series starring Jemma Redgrave as Dr. Eleanor Bramwell. It’s around 1890 and she’s running a clinic in the poor part of London. Fighting the good fight against male chauvinism, class elitism and crushing poverty.
Okay, today I’ll leave you with a recipe- This is very basic. If you aren’t sure about the seasonings, add a little or a lot to your taste!
Fresh Garden Salsa
Everything is finely chopped. I’ve tried using the food processor and it’s “mushy” and I prefer the chopped vegetables.
8 fresh tomatoes
1 good sized onion
1 large or 2 small green peppers
1 or 2 finely diced jalapenos
1 heaping tablespoon Goya Recaito (this is a cilantro condiment available in the Intl. section of the grocery store) or 1-2 tablespoons fresh chopped cilantro
1 t. salt (entirely optional- I prefer tomatoes with a little salt)
Mix everything in a large bowl. Refrigerate a couple of hours to let the flavor develop. Serve with everything and enjoy!
Not sure how long it will keep-it only lasts a couple of days around here!
