This shouldn’t be happening….

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

For the FIFTH time in the last couple of years, a despondent father has destroyed his family here in Maryland. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,555880,00.html?test=latestnews
It happens all over the country, but being familiar with the neighborhood, the schools, their workplaces etc., …..it’s like a bad dream.
He may have had a mental problem, but it won’t surprise me if it [...]

Support Your Local Turtle

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

News that made me smile! There’s a patch of ground that’s a swampy mess, aka Maryland wetlands. Rather than go in with mowers and weedeaters, the State has hired a herd of goats to clean it up. The goats get to munch grass, and the cute little endangered bog turtle doesn’t get mowed over!

The Political Kind!
Last year, the Powers that Be of Maryland decided they needed more money for the budget.
Hmmmm, how to get it? Gambling? Yes, but nobody wants it in their neighborhood! Raise taxes on cigarettes and booze? That always works. I saw a pack of Marlboros selling for over $8!
” I know, let’s raise [...]

Yippee! Spring!

Friday, April 17th, 2009

It’s a bright sunny day so I took the camera outside to make an update. We’ve had a lot of rain and everything is very green. Some of the neighbors have trees in full flower, but the apple and cherry trees in our yard haven’t opened yet (coming attraction!)
We’ve got lots of rhubarb!
And the [...]

Another one bites the dust

The Reaper over at Magazine Death Pool reports the demise of Starlog Magazine. Here’s a copy from my collection: Time flies- that’s the March, 1995 issue! It was a slick, well-produced magazine full of pictures and features about sci-fi movies and TV. Not cheap, it was $4.99 in 1995. There’s a companion magazine called “Fangoria” [...]

It’s Pi day….

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

3.14, get it? Actually I was reading up on it and happened upon a bit of info that Daniel Tennant holds the current record for “cyphering” Pi! I read Daniel’s very good autobiography, Born on a Blue Day last year. I’ve always been attracted and intrigued by people who are quirky and different. Daniel, being [...]

Red State Update

No, not the one on YouTube- although I like Jackie and Dunlap.
Our governor, Martin O’Malley is on the front page of the Baltimore Sun today. He’s leading a drive to ban the death penalty in Maryland. He’s not the first governor to want a ban. In 2002, Parris Glendening, the gov before last (Ehrlich) declared [...]

February Thaw!

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Hi. Last week I felt overwhelmed by grim economic news, combined with some bitterly cold weather. We got some ice, not like Kentucky for sure, but oh I hate ice! The good news is, it’s all gone now. It reached 62 degrees Saturday. I opened the back door and little sage Vera spent a lot [...]

Thirty Winters….

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind may blow
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow
Snow on snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter
Long, long ago
I’m not sure who wrote this- I think it’s a Christmas carol by “traditional” The thing is Christmas comes just four days after the start of Winter; I [...]

Ice, Ice Baby

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Hello from the garden spot of central Maryland, where it’s currently a balmy 35 degrees F, (3 Celsius) We seem to be in the ice band of the latest weather event. It rained all night, but with the air temp below freezing, everything got a good coating.  People look at it philosophically and say, “at [...]
